I wanted to share some avenues and contacts that might be helpful for you in finding both short and long-term leases for your social enterprise events. Below is a summary of the resources I’ve gathered so far:
-
Consultancy/Lease Help:
- Shahida can assist you with lease arrangements and covenants. Feel free to use some of your consultancy allowance to book a session with her. Her PA, Owen, can be contacted to arrange an appointment or phone call: [email protected]
- Morgan Killick offers similar advice. He recommends using Rightmove's Commercial subsite for property searches. If you are looking in Sheffield, you can also get support from the Invest Sheffield team at SCC. Dean from the team is highly recommended for this type of assistance: Invest Sheffield Team
- SSEN are in the process of setting up a partnership with Wrigley's and I've been told they can offer a no free no obligation advice call for any SSEN members. The contact is : [email protected]
-
Property Searches:
- For those looking in Sheffield, there is an online property search available here.
- Rightmove’s Commercial subsite is excellent for finding properties listed by sizeable agents.
- As a small business you may qualify for business rate relief and pay no business rates.
-
Short-Term and Session-Based Space:
- Consider looking into meanwhile use space, which can often be accessed for free by charities or social enterprises. Landlords with empty units must pay business rates regardless of occupancy and may allow you to use the space if you can cover the business rates. You can research more about this at Bloc Projects.
- I’ve heard through the grapevine that Paul Lancaster manages around 25% of properties in the city centre and might be a good contact in terms of finding vacant spaces. His website/contact details are here.
- CADS is another potential source, especially for arts-based activities. Link here.
-
Future Opportunities:
- I’m pushing to open a SSEN Hub to offer free or heavily subsidized space for social enterprises to host classes, workshops, and sessions. While I can't make any promises yet, I believe this would be very beneficial and would be great to act as a central point for idea exchange and collaboration. I will keep you updated on any progress.
